Jerry "Punkin" Pelfrey

Jerry “Punkin” Pelfrey (group manager and lead singer) Jerry is the middle of three children born to Jerry, Sr., and Eva Pelfrey. His father plays the piano, and his mother sings. Punkin – as he is affectionately referred to by friends and fans alike – has spent all of his adult life immersed in some form of Southern Gospel Music. He got his start with the Southmen Quartet, followed by stints with the Impacts, Choo Choo City Boys, Apple City Boys, Rowlands and most recently as the lead singer of the award-winning Gold City Quartet. “My favorite group had always been Gold City,” points out Jerry. “If they were close, I would go hear them. “It was an honor to stand and sing with those men. I lived my dream.” Jerry was featured on Gold City's hit song, “ Lord of Live,” which climbed to the No. 2 position on the Singing News Magazine Top-80 Chart for the the month of November in 2012. The Pelfreys now perform the song in concert. “Sharing that Lord of Life story in Matthew 16, where Jesus said, 'who am I to you' … the fact of who he is very important,” explains Jerry. “My desire would be to encourage people to spend more time with Him. You never get to know anyone until you live with them. If Jesus is part of your life, He's living with you. You are living with Him. I would use the I am (statements) in (the gospel of) John. It points us to who he is. “Jesus performed eight miracles. Each one of those miracles points to who He is. The feeding of the 5,000 points us to the fact of where Jesus said, I am the bread of life. The more time we spend with Him, the more He reveals to us, and the more we know who He is.” Jerry's wife Mikki is the group's alto singer, and they have one child, seven-year-old Jerry Wayne Pelfrey, Jr. (better known as P.J.). P.J. often joins the group for a song or two in concert. “He is our biggest fan,” says Jerry. Jerry has also served as a minister of music and as a youth pastor. Some of Jerry's earliest experiences in Southern Gospel Music were as a drummer. In fact, he builds and sells Punkinater Custom Drum kits. “I sold my drum kit in 1992,” shares Jerry. “I had worked through high school to buy a drum kit. When I started singing, the quartet I had needed a way to pull our stuff. I had gone to look at a trailer, and the guy said, 'you need a down payment.' He said, 'I heard you have a nice drum kit.' Then, he said, 'I'll give you a thousand dollars for them.' So, I cried carrying them out.'” Three years later, Punkinater Custom Drums was born. “In 1995, I built my first kit,” remembers Jerry. “I finished them, went to play on a session, and the owner of the studio bought them. So, I built another one.” That was approximately 150 drum kits ago. Among the prominent drummers in Southern Gospel Music to become an owner of Punkinater Custom Drum kit are Ricky Free (formerly of Brian Free and Assurance), Michael Hopper (of the Hoppers), Nathan Fauscett (formerly of the Isaacs and the Jason Crabb Tour) and Greg Ritchie (Gaither Concert Tour). While Punkinater Custom Drums creatively allows Jerry to scratch a musical itch, the true beat of his heart is firmly entrenched within the life-changing purpose of the Pelfreys' ministry. “My focus is reaching people for Christ and encouraging people,” emphasizes Jerry.
