Born into a rich musical heritage, it was seemingly inevitable that the Pelfrey siblings would be immersed in some form of harmonic endeavor.
“Around grammar-school age, we started singing,” shares Kim Pelfrey VanHoozier. “We had a kids choir at church. We learned to sing to get out of doing dishes. If you were singing, you wouldn't have to clean up.”
Jerry Pelfrey adds, “Our whole family is musical. My mother grew up singing. She and her brothers all played some type of musical instrument. When I was a kid, my uncle had the original Impacts (in the 1970s). I watched them travel on the buses and sing. Early on, I fell in love with the music.”
Jerry also fell in love with his wife, Mikki Johnson Pelfrey, in 2005. That led to a marriage in December of that year and an alto singer to join Jerry and Kim, completing the Pelfreys' rich blend. “My sister is my favorite singer,” emphasizes Jerry. “My wife has a great ear. She sings great harmony. She's the glue.”
Much like her husband and sister-in-law, Mikki has an extensive musical background as well.
“I don't really remember a time when I wasn't singing,” points out Mikki. “The first time I remember singing a solo was in a competition in elementary school. I sang a duet with a girl in my class, 'Little David, Play on Your Harp.'”
The Pelfreys actually burst on the Southern Gospel scene in Southeastern Tennessee during 2002, and the trio toured until 2008.
Jerry Pelfrey's dream of one day singing with Gold City became a reality in 2011, and he remained with the group for two years.
“I got to sit in front of my baby brother and watch him live his dream,” shares Kim. “That's probably the coolest thing in the whole world to see somebody reach their mecca. It's so great when God opens a door for someone you know.”
Jerry adds, “I lived my dream. I got to stand before hundreds of people, thousands of people, and tell them about the Lord of Life. I'm a fan of the music. It feeds me. It ministers to me. My favorite group has always been Gold City.”
When Jerry's tenure with Gold City concluded, the Pelfreys were re-birthed.
“God allowed me to sing with the best quartet to ever step on stage … but I believe His perfect will is for me to sing with my family,” explains Jerry. “Not only are they both great singers, but it's my family. What a privilege!
“We have a mission. Without His touch on it, it's in vain.”
Jerry was featured on Gold City's hit single “Lord Of Life.” The powerful ballad rose to the number-two position on the Singing News Magazine Top-80 Chart for the month of November in 2012.
The Pelfreys have adopted “Lord of Life” into their program, hoping that the life-changing message contained within the lyrics will minister to Christians and most importantly to those in need of salvation.
“It's awesome,” emphasizes Kim. “There's freedom and there's comfort because this is what I feel like what we've been called to do since we were kids.
“The timing is right. It's time for us to be doing what He needs us to do.”
Mikki adds, “It's definitely exciting, the fact that we are able to do it as a family is amazing. Standing on stage with your husband every night is great. It's a dream come true to be able to minister with your family.”
